End of Support for Windows 10: An Opportunity, Not the End
On October 14, 2025, Microsoft will officially end support for the Windows 10 operating system. This means that users will no longer receive security updates, leaving their computers increasingly exposed to risks and less suitable for everyday use. Older computers, in particular, will be affected, as many cannot upgrade to Windows 11 due to hardware requirements (such as the mandatory TPM 2.0). Because of Microsoft’s business strategies, a large amount of still functional computer equipment could end up as electronic waste.
There Is a Better Way: Linux
Fortunately, there is an alternative – the world of open source. GNU/Linux operating systems are free, secure, privacy-respecting, and work well even on older hardware. Our organization uses it as well – we install it on all donated computers, and most of our volunteers also use it on their personal machines.
What unites us all is that, on Linux, we don’t just feel safe – we experience the freedom of open source, and that feeling is truly contagious. By switching to Linux, users free themselves from the limitations of proprietary systems while contributing to a more sustainable and fair digital society.
The End Of 10 Initiative
As Windows 10 support comes to an end, a global initiative called End Of 10 has emerged, connecting organizations, volunteers, and communities ready to help people transition to Linux.
On the website https://endof10.org/sl/, you can find:
- a list of participating organizations,
- an interactive map with workshops and support centers around the world,
- and a Slovenian subpage featuring local initiatives.
Among the active participants is Društvo Duh časa (Spirit of Time Association), whose volunteers have long promoted the reuse of computer equipment and the spread of open-source knowledge.
Now Is the Right Time
Switching to Linux is not just a technical choice – it’s a social step toward greater independence and sustainability. Instead of letting thousands of computers end up in landfills, we can bring them back to life together and enable them to serve users, schools, and communities for years to come.
